Why pennies for progress

Why does this program exist?

The mission and vision of the Pennies for Progress Program is to further develop the county's transportation infrastructure and to be recognized for having the best road system in the Carolinas.  The program’s primary benefits have been (and are anticipated to continued being) increased safety, connectivity, prosperity and quality of life. The Pennies program has been (and will likely continue being) the county’s primary source of road improvement funding.

All of the funds from Pennies 1, 2, 3, and 4 total over $1 billion. This includes money generated from the sales tax along with any state or federal grants. This number includes the State Infrastructure Bank grant that widened I-77 to 8 lanes in the early 2000s.  The County leveraged the Pennies 1 program/projects to get the grant for I-77.
